Foreword
It has been years since the Center for Dementia of Gangwon State has been with the people of Gangwon. During this time, we have seen a steady increase in those suffering from dementia in Gangwon. With the increase of people with dementia, many suggestions are being made nationally to help resolve this situa- tion, but we are still facing troubles improving societal aware- ness towards dementia. Within this social trend, the Center for Dementia of Gangwon State and the Center for Dementia Relief (치매안심센터) have been trying to improve the negative social perception of demen- tia and making a “Dementia Relief Society” (치매안심사회) in which the people with dementia and their family may live happi- ly within their local community.
Even so, many are not receiving the appropriate care that they deserve due to remnant societal hostility towards people with dementia. Even worse, as caring for persons with dementia requires continuous and lengthy commitment, some caregivers suffer from social isolation or are restricted from participating in the workforce.
Fully aware of these difficulties, the Center for Dementia of Gangwon State created an easily comprehensible cartoon. We compiled a series of webtoons describing dementia that we have been publishing since last year, and added information about the societal support that people with dementia and their family may receive.
We hope that this book will help relieve the societal discomfort towards dementia and better understand the facts related to this disease. We extend our greatest gratitude to the Municipal and County Centers for Dementia Relief that work hard for the health and happiness of the many elderly in Gangwon State.

Korean people tend to be tolerant of binge-drinking. Although it has become rarer due to COVID, get-togethers often involve alcohol.
Sometimes, elders have continued to drink throughout their lives unaware of the problems of alcoholism. With their snacks, or with their after work dinners, they enjoy a few drinks.

When we think of “cognitive function,” we often think of our memory. Our memory is made up of a complex system. Based on the duration, we categorize our memory into either Short-term or Long-term memory.

Dementia causes a gradual regression of the brain’s structure and function. So there are many more disturbances to functions of daily living other than these declines in cognitive functions.
There are studies showing that there is a relationship between slowing walking speed and dementia progression due to the loss of motor function.
If we test the various types of cognitive functions, we may discover other problems that the people with dementia themselves or their family were unaware of. Get it thoroughly checked with an early checkup.

To recover from delirium, it is important that we cure the physical disorder that is causing it in the first place. In order to temporarily manage BPSD or sleeplessness, we sometimes prescribe drugs as well.
Even when there is no particular symptom, you should get regularly checked up so as to treat your underlying conditions and manage your health.

We are suddenly seeing signs of dementia.
We often say that it is dangerous when a person changes abruptly. The same is true for an elder’s health. We must be wary of abrupt changes to their health.

It is also important to take good care of your hygiene and nutrition. The affectionate care from loved ones within a familiar and comfortable environment also greatly helps in recovering from delirium. During these exhausting summer days, take good care and stay healthy.
