What are your plans for the future?

Last year, I could see Cho Jiseung very often on stages and in TV dramas, but after "Ordinary Days" ended in November, you’ve been quiet since. How have you been? After "Ordinary Days," I held a talk concert and then went to the US for a holiday. It was such a long-awaited break, I wanted to travel for two or three months. But once I arrived in LA and started traveling, I really, really wanted to act. Anyway, LA was full of artists. I've always wanted to meet artists from all over the world, so it was really fun. "I'm a tourist from Korea, I want to have fun on this journey." Through these conversations, I got to know many artists who shared my passion. I worked on photography projects with the friends I met, made three short films by volunteering, made a music video for a singer friend, and even made a dance film. I actually planned to travel for two or three months, but I had to return to Korea after about a month and a half. In March, I went to Germany to film an independent film. Upon my return to Korea, I began rehearsing for the musical "Siblings," and I'm currently diligently practicing for the show.

First, I'll be meeting audiences with the Siblings performance in April. I've also received a film offer from the US, and I'm checking my schedule, visa, etc. to see if I can appear in it. I'm also planning to film a thriller film in the second half of this year. I can't give you any details yet, but I'm taking action classes to prepare for it. I saw actress Cho Ji-seung's action scenes. It seems like you're very interested in martial arts. How do you maintain your physical fitness?

I've always loved Hollywood action films. Ever since I was little, I dreamed of one day becoming an actor who can show off action moves. So, I've been training in jiu-jitsu and boxing, and I'm also taking action classes. I learned dance from my mother, a dancer, from a young age, so I'm used to using my body.

Is being an action star your goal? It's not that I only want to action movies. I've loved watching movies since when I was very little. And since when I was 20, I've worked on over 20 independent films and worked with cameras. Since I was in college, I've been active in theater and musicals, so I haven't had much time to work on films. I love the stage and find it enjoyable, but I plan to focus more on film in the future.

I think 2018 was the year I met the largest audience I've ever met. I knew better than anyone about my shortcomings, so I felt a lot of self-reproach and worry, but thanks to the audience, I realized I'm a truly happy person. For two hours, you listened intently to the stories we tell on stage, sometimes leaving us with deep thoughts, sometimes with emotion, and sometimes with a certain meaning. Thanks to you, those two hours of my day have become truly precious. The time I spend performing feels like a gift to the audience, and the audience gives me back. The audience has helped me, despite my shortcomings, become someone I can give to others. "I was first connected with director Kim Tae-hyung through <Capone Trilogy>, but the timing just wasn't right. I appeared in the showcase of <Fan Letter>, but I was also at overseas for the premiere, so I couldn't appear." While the timing was unfortunate, Hikaru was a perfect fit for Cho Jiseung. "I was really excited about the character. It's a role every actress would want to play at least once. "Hikaru is a confident and self-assured person. I worried that I wasn't ready, wondering if I could really do it like Hikaru. I was a little embarrassed and passive. But I had to become Hikaru, and I wouldn't be as shameless as I thought. When I go on stage, I have to be as shameless as I want, and that helps the other person. Sehun and Hikaru are the same, yet different, yet inevitably the same. Starting with the choreography where they gaze at each other and become one, they are portrayed as separate individuals, Hikaru. What kind of person does Cho Jiseung see Hikaru as?

"Hikaru isn't a bad person at all. Sehun and Hikaru are the same. Sehun's painful past, his insecurity about being loved, his weakness for expressing himself. Hikaru is born as the person he desires. He appears as a woman only through Haejin's perspective. When I sing 'Nobody Knows,' I truly connect with Sehun. The loneliness, the frustration, the loneliness of not being loved, those feelings are so vividly conveyed that it's heartbreaking." Opinions about Hikaru in particular are bound to vary. "When I appear as Hikaru, it's one body, but isn't it also a different character? A muse who confidently leads, is overflowing with talent, commands the mood, and is loved just for her presence. Everyone dreams of being a muse, but when you become an inspiration to people without putting in effort or decoration for your desires, doesn't that give you self-esteem? They admire and aspire just by reading my writing without looking at anything else. I felt like I was trapped in Sehun's ego." Cho Jiseung approached Hikaru's existence more than the fact that she's "someone's muse."

"Rather than focusing on her as a muse, I focused on Hikaru. Many viewers see Hikaru as bad … as someone who has become dark. Hikaru is such a pure and simple character. That's what attracked me to her. She doesn't 'vaguely change' and hurt anyone. She becomes a source of strength for the creative work of someone she admires, and her very existence becomes a muse. She transforms as she pursues her own desires. I found it truly captivating." In the film, Hikaru gives Hae-jin a pen as he coughs up blood. While this may seem cruel, it can also be interpreted as a sign of love from another perspective.

"If Mr. Haejin had coughed and lost consciousness, I don't think Hikaru would have done the same (laughs). Even on stage, when Hikaru picks up his pen, the actors who play Haejin's character will sparkle in their eyes and come up to him and write, as if they're absorbed in something. Hikaru probably thinks his actions are saving Mr. Haejin's life. He thinks creating works is a meaningful, valuable, and respectable life."

The experience of love, the way of love

Given the title, I wondered if Cho Jiseung had ever sent a fan letter to anyone. "I sent one to Daniel Radcliffe. I was so captivated by his cuteness when I watched Harry Potter as a child. I dreamed of getting married (laughs). I started acting to marry Daniel Radcliffe. I spent about a year wondering how I could get married, but I figured acting and filming together would make it possible. I told my parents, prepared, and enrolled in an acting high school. I wrote a fan letter, consulting an English dictionary, and to my surprise, I received a reply. He sent me a photo of himself and an update about his upcoming filming in China. Even now, I find it fascinating and laugh-inducing."

Everyone likely feels the presence of Hikaru at some point in their lives. Someone who speaks to our inner selves when we're about to make a decision or take action. It could be a question of right or wrong, but what would happen if that someone's presence, suddenly appearing, began to consume his thoughts and ideas? What would Cho Jiseung, living as Hikaru, think?

"It seems to have come out when I was feeling happy, when I was conflicted and struggling, when I was depressed and felt inadequate, when I felt like blaming myself. I would talk to myself. I don't think I was drawn to Hikaru, but rather, it was a coordination of Sehun's opinions and Hikaru's actions. Wouldn't it have been a little better if Sehun had acknowledged who I was?" So, did Hikaru truly love Mr. Haejin? What were Hikaru's feelings for Mr. Haejin, who had made him his muse? They might seem similar to Sehun's, but the outcome is clearly different.

"There's a line from the <Fan Letter> showcase that's no longer excist: 'I love that person too. It's just a different way.' Hikaru loves Mr. Haejin, too. Of course, the point at which he experiences love is different for everyone, but Hikaru loved the energy and gaze that radiated from Mr. Haejin's writing. The writing that connected with him. More than growing as a person or living a happy life, it was about creating the writing he loved. Handing him the pen and giving him inspiration."

Cho Jiseung, who is shining brightly as she returns to the musical stage after a long absence and takes a step closer to achieving her dream, answered with the word "dream": "Love." "Of course, I thought of it as an accomplishment as an actress, but as each day passes, it's the feeling of love. There are many emotions, such as love for family and those we connect with in life, but love is so wonderful to give and receive. If I had to lose everything and choose just one thing, what would it be? In the long run, I'd want to achieve more as an actress, but in the short term, I'd choose love."

Maybe it’s because I'm scared. At some point, my feelings of love for someone grew stronger. Even toward unspecified people, I feel love. I think it was fear that gave me hope. It doesn't stop my heart; it affects others. Everyone is going through hardships, but I hope we can overcome together and laugh together. This might seem arrogant, but sometimes, when I see others, I cry. I think of myself as happy person, and I feel happy to be loved." She loves delicious food, she loves working out just as much, she loves reading, and she's passionate about finding the script she loves. She's more concerned about what happens if she can not love anymore than getting hurt. Her heart and mind are closer than anyone else's, and that's why she's driven by emotions, not just her body. That's why her colleague Byun Yo-han nicknamed her "Beast," and she chuckles.

"I love the feeling of a burning heart, a boiling emotion, a tender heart. I love loving even when I'm hurt. I've seen people say they can't love because they're afraid of getting hurt, but I'm not afraid at all. I have a lot of unrequited love, and I love giving love and being loved. I worry about what would happen if I couldn't do anything because I was afraid of getting hurt, but I'm not afraid of getting hurt."

Why do you travel abroad so often? "I wanted to work abroad. I wanted to do action movies, too. Aren't there so many fun and cool stories? I spent about 10 months in England, but when I actually got there, there wasn't much I could do because I don’t have a proper visa. Then, I ended up making a short film, and by chance, I got an offer to do a Dove commercial. It made me realize that just having a body isn't enough. I'm thinking about sending the footage I shot in the US to an agency and get a visa."

'Fan letters' Son Seung-Won and Cho Ji-seung are breathing together.

PressCall, a musical 'Fanletter' (Kim Tae-hyeong), was held at Dongho Hall, Dongseo Art Center, Seoul, at 2 pm today (24th).

뮤지컬 ' 팬레터는 ' 1930 년대 경성 , 당대 최고 문인들의 일화를 바탕으로 하여 당시 문인들의 예술과 사랑을 그린 작품이며 그 시대 예술가들의 삶과 고민을 엿볼 수 있는 작품.

지난 공연에서 무대와 펜, 원고지 등 상징적인 소품을 활용하여 무대를 채웠다면, 이번 시즌에는 조금 더 경성 시대의 모습이 잘 드러날 수 있게 무대를 설정했다. 계단을 두고 층을 만들어 2

, 동선의 다양함을 꾀하고 , 세훈의 독립적인 공간을 만들어 주어 , 그 공간 안에서 세훈의 고뇌를 더욱 돋보이게 했다. 넓은 동숭홀을 알차게 활용하여 경성시대로 가득 채운 것 이 돋보이는 순간이다.
