Brace Yourself with Arts, Grow with Arts
To “brace” means to “take courage” and to “hold out.” As we are getting back to normal after the pandemic, we reflect on our attitude to life and the role of performances and festivals. Things change so fast and all kinds of events are happening. Amid such external richness, we need to keep ourselves from inner poverty. To do so, what is the most important is to develop our inner strength. Let us never lose our self-confidence and brace ourselves for the present and future. That way, we could “brace” each other firmly.

Nongaebyeolgok Jang Insook This is a narrative dance created by Kim Kyungran, based on Kim Suak’s posthumous dance. The dance was originally performed during the festival commemorating Nongae, a Korean gisaeng (courtesan) famous for her sacrificial assassination of a Japanese general. What is notable includes a towel dance in the style of gisaengs from Jinju and creative towel movements with shamanistic colors from the southern coast of Korea.
Ssangseungmu Kim Chaelin, Shim Jiyoon Kim Kyungran reinterpreted Seungmu (Korean dance performed by Buddhist monks) from Korea’s Namwon area which was performed by Lee Jangsan and then by Cho Gapnyeo. The performers’ costume is characterized by two sashes and flower-shaped conical hats. The two dancers first put their hands together to greet before their duet dance. Their performance shines light on the two peoples’ hearts as they face each other.
Gyobanggutgeorichum Kim Seohyun, Bae Woojin, Kim Jinsung, Lee Junghyun The dance re-enacts the eight shaman songs left by Kim Su-ak, the last virtuoso from the gisaeng call-office of Jinju. At the same time, the drum beats make clear Kim Kyungran’s own improvisation and individuality. Feel the four seasons expressed by the four ladies!
Minsalpurichum Eom Junga, Kim Seohyun, Bae Woojin, Kim Chaelin, Kim Jinsung, Shim Jiyoon, Lee Junghyun An exorcism dance from the gisaeng call-office of Namwon, which used to be performed by Lee Jangsan and then by Cho Gapnyeo. Unlike other exorcism dances, the dancers dance without towel. Choreographer Kim Kyungran reinterpreted the dance by highlighting the powerful style of Dongpyeonje, one of Korean pansori styles.
Norae Garak Janggochum Seong Yunseon, Yoon Minjeong This duet performance exquisitely combines a cheerful dance with folk songs from Korea’s Gyeonggi area and exhilarating drum beats in the style of Kim Byeongseop. Take note of the dialogue between a teacher and student.
Gueumgeommu Jang Insook, Kim Seohyun, Kim Chaelin, Kim Jinsung, Shim Jiyoon, Lee Junghyun Among Korean dances, sword dance boasts the longest history. To the posthumous oral sounds left by Kim Suak, a master dancer of sword dance from Jinju, Kim Kyungran added sword dance movements from that local area to choreograph a solo dance. Directed by Jang Insook, this performance has six sword dancers.
Jang Insook Jang Insook is a member of Seoul Gisaeng School, a network of traditional Korean dancers. She has founded and run Heewon Dance Company to share traditional dance with young dancers in their 20s and 30s. She's a Ph.D. Candidate in Dance at Sejong University and a holder of Jinju Gisaeng School Shaman Dance, intangible cultural heritage No. 21 of South Gyeongsang Province in Korea. She won the dance prize at the 2020 KBS Gukak Grand Prize.
Jang Insook Heewon Dance Company “Heewon” means “a garden of joy with dance.” The company preserves, restructures and re-creates traditional dance with contemporary stories, thus making their own creative world. Considering how to popularize traditional dance, they present interesting and intriguing performances of different concepts, without damaging the characteristics and values of traditional dance. They enjoy dancing wholeheartedly and believe that their work process should also be full of expectations and excitement. With this in mind, they are walking together along the path of dance.

The Jubilee is the year of rest that occurs every 50 years. In ancient Israel, the Jubilee year was the occasion to set free all those in slavery, It was time for everyone to feel the joy of liberation and freedom. By delving into the Jubilee, <The Jubilee Analysis> focuses on “well-dying.” Until we die, our bodies are marked with traces of life just like a tree’s growth rings. Telling people’s stories, the performance invites you to think about your own body and death. Hopefully, this could lead you to find the infinity and meaning of what lies beyond the simple end of limited life after the liberation of your body.
Ghost Group This project-based creative group was formed to have their voices heard clearly by giving shape to abstract concepts with different images and movements. For this, they were inspired by the word “ghost,” which glimmers without a fixed shape. They are interested in how every individual’s own uniqueness meets artistic elements to unveil the variability of the arts. They explore what perspectives could help them develop artistic materials to produce works through which people with different points of view could share and relate to one theme. At the same time, they pursue experimental and expanded stages to meet audiences with expressions of different media.
Kim Hyea-yoon Kim Hyea-yoon is interested in themes anyone could relate to. After her first choreographic work in 2016, she presented <Two-Gather> and <Techniques of Relationships> to win the SCF Awards (jury’s award) for creative performances by young choreographers. Since then, she has actively performed in Ghost Group, being invited to festivals in and out of Korea. She is currently making clear her artistic direction by considering how to realize the creator’s artistic capacity in performances.

This is a reinterpretation of <Hamlet> and <Macbeth>, two of the four tragedies by Shakespeare. It started with a suggestion from the director of the Yerevan Shakespeare International Theater Festival in Armenia. In the original plays, the two characters die tragic deaths within their respective narratives. A new performance called <Ham:beth> is also based on their desires, choices and conflicts. Inside such a paradigm of madness, several Ham:beths start dancing on stage. Intended to make us realize the “value of existence” and “positive desires,” the songs of bodies end up making us find out ourselves living in the present. Although the performance is based on a Western classic, its musical elements (combining pansori and rock) and the dancers’ movements generate strong Eastern sensibility. In particular, choreographer Kim Jaeduk composed and wrote the words for the music, which harmonizes with the dance and acting in an irreplaceable way. Enjoy the positive desires expressed by Modern Table with their own primitive vitality and cheerfulness.
Modern Table “Music you see, dance you hear.” The dance company communicates with audiences through their intuitive movements that don’t require any interpretation. Dancers sing. There is no border between the stage and the audience. Such a setting offers synesthetic experiences and brand new, touching moments. Their sensibility appealing to anyone and Korean themes led them to draw attention outside Korea first. Since then, they have continued to attract audiences with their unpredictable ideas and experimental performances. They are creating their own unique stages by making Korean-style lines visible amid their dynamic movements.

You’re the songs you sing so loudly when you know you’re all alone. You’re the places that you’ve been to, and the one that you call home.
I start by reflecting on my relationship with “dance,” my lifetime companion. I then think about the time I have shared with my beloved ones I have met on my way. I was inspired by “Not,” Erin Hanson’s poem which tells me to accept myself as I am, without confining myself to external surroundings. As a dancer, I expressed my great affection for this world I belong to, highlighting free and artistic movements combining hip-hop and contemporary dance. I finally free myself from my passion and intense love for dance while I get closer to myself.
Jang Eunjung With her motto “for everyday greatness,” she cherishes the acceptance of different bodies and sentiments as her key value, trying to share one’s pure self. She dreams of traveling around Korea with “free dance.” She is currently leading Jang Eunjung Dance Company and project group “Dancing Women.” She serves as a choreographer, dancer and educator.

When the waves of my soul rise, I will set out to sea again, to the sea of my soul which is so deep …
Among the human feelings which include joy, anger, sorrow and pleasure, this lament expresses “sorrow” with dance comparable to a song. Modern people float around, feeling empty amid material richness. They remind us of a sailboat in the open sea. I imagined a small boat facing different waves of life; the boat shakes and sinks. Starting from my imagination, I wrote a poem, line by line. I then put the poem into movements. I would like to express our abyss, making sounds of frustration, crying and singing. I just dance to the blowing wind and rising waves, hoping that our boat floats again.
Jang Hyerim Jang Hyerim is a choreographer of traditional dance. She regards “tradition” not as something fixed but as something changeable, even today. After graduating from Korea National University of Arts, she founded the 99 Art Company with a motto of “dance touching your soul.” Like-minded artists have collaborated to present a variety of works, performing in countries including Korea, Sweden, Italy, Russia and Brazil. Today, the company still hopes to be like a tree that takes deeper root as it grows toward the sky.

Looking into society through a viewfinder, you easily find different incidents happening in your blind spot. Looking into a scene you didn’t care to observe closely, you finally see so many victims of the incident huddling together with their sick stories. What kicked them out into the blind spot? Starting from this question, this performance is intended to let you know about workers’ lonely death.
<Aura> isn’t just about commemorating their death but it is about finding out about the truth. It mourns for those who reached their end of life with the causes of their death unknown, for those who fell in a workplace because of cold and sharp metal machines.
Lee Ei Sul After graduating from Korea National University of Arts, she was a dancer of Ahn Eun Me Company for seven years. This experience led her to take interest in how to make Korean dance contemporary. Currently working as a choreographer, she makes clear body movements with her own colors, based on Korean dance. She also formed a group called “Unique Monde (unique world).” In this group, she collaborates with dancers who freely move between acting and body movements. With them, she goes beyond different social issues to focus on human sentiment. Doing so, she keeps exploring Korean movements and objets.

Dance is a genre that is inevitably dominated by physical effects. This performance started with this imagination full of curiosity: what if we reverse the laws of space and time in a dance? The stage then functions as a laboratory where this imagination becomes a reality. Using each other and objets, dancers change different physical effects and keep on doing their research. Through elements including dance, videos, magic and sound, this interactive performance gives shape to a phenomenon that can’t happen in reality and unfolds the blurred boundaries between the virtual world and reality. Serving as a virtual space connecting reality and imagination, videos rearrange space and time with their rewinding effect. Colorful audiovisual images expand your senses to stimulate your imagination. All this leads you to freely enjoy the scenes as they are, rather than trying to find the dark reality implied in the performance.
While its 15-minute-long premiere in 2022 had a TV and two dancers, this extended version takes 30 minutes and has a variety of visual means and three dancers, inviting you to a three-dimensional kaleidoscope. It will be an exciting game where your imagination continues unlimitedly in the choreographer’s world of imagination.
Cosmos in art The name of this multiple arts community came from the idea that planets with their own colors gather together to form an orderly structure of the cosmos. A “multiple arts community” refers to a group in which artists of all genres and fields (e.g. dance, video, music, painting and costume) complete a work of art together. Each member owns a “planet”; they actively suggest ideas and respect each other to form a horizontal work environment. Based on this work process, they focus on three key words: “diverse,” “multifaceted” and “multidisciplinary.” In this way, they strive to present works people could relate to and feel familiar with.

I have lived in Seoul for 19 years. I had a short period of joy right after I started living on my own. But I soon found out that I have to live a busy and fierce life every day to survive in this big city I don’t feel familiar. I can’t even afford to think about what the date is today and who I am. I just keep moving forward.
Inspired by her own experience, the choreographer describes an aspect of modern people who leave their beloved family and home to struggle all alone. The dancer full of scars from fierce life also reflects ourselves. To us who repeat overheating and exhaustion without idle running, the ladybug’s story conveys a heartwarming message of comfort and hope.
Ha Ji Hye With her motto “life is art,” she works as a choreographer telling us about contemporariness through simple life stories. She made herself known first as a dancer of Ahn Eun Me Company and Korea National Contemporary Dance Company. Inspired by the “aha moment,” which refers to a moment of realizing something, she formed the “Aha Movement” in order to communicate with audiences through the keyword “empathy.” In particular, she deals with themes such as “living away from home,” “one-person household,” “anxiety for survival” and “competition.” With these themes, she unfolds images of “labor” and “exhaustion” in our society of fatigue, by means of body movements. In this way, she serves as an advocate for those in the social blind spot. She has drawn attention by expressing the reality of life with strict musical analysis, rhythmical movements and narrative performances.

As time goes by, things change even faster. A case in point is AI. In particular, CHATGPT is going beyond the technical realm to seep into everyday life. Observing how people’s experiences affect their thinking, the choreographer hopes that AI’s neutral data functions as a new channel of communication between the creator and audience. It is with this hope that she starts working on the dance. The performance unveils the intention of an individual who asks questions to GPT-3.5 and selects information they need as well as the process of printing it out physically. Observe how AI’s sophisticated and vast language and its keen probability affect us and if this could enable seamless communication.
Jun Boram Choreographer and dancer Jun Boram enjoys observing things around her to look into what things look like and how different bodies are connected. She has recently taken interest in rock climbing. She is also fascinated by new possibilities that bodies need to consider as the space and world occupied by people expand.

Birds of a feather flock together.

In Chinese characters, the words “people” and “attraction” have the same pronunciation. It then leads to the idea that similar “people” “attract” each other. Is it a good or bad thing to be with similar people? As Korean children’s song goes, “Birds get together / Flowers get together / We get together on our way to school / Like attracts like.” Indeed, all living organisms stay with those who are similar to them. Birds of a feather flock together. For what purpose have we flocked together?
Kim Jungsoo She believes in the power of experience. With mixed feelings, she keenly observes movements and flows going back and forth between analogue and digital spaces. In this context, she focuses on what Koreanness is. Her dance is comparable to swimming between Korea’s post-modern dance and contemporary dance.

Caring about Me, You and Us

As we go through worldwide turmoil including the pandemic, climate crisis and war, we realize that caring about each other and the environment also consists in caring about ourselves. Organization of a festival inevitably entails environmental pollution. Having been run under the theme of “care” in 2022, the CCAF is heading to carbon neutrality by recognizing such issues and making improvements.
During the festival period, theaters and accommdotions need different products. The CCAF encourages reusable products. As for plastic products, we reuse them as much as posssible after washing them.
Each show needs at least 100 tickets. It is simple to distribute paper tickets and it is also easy to use for everyone. But most of the tickets are used just once and thrown away. So the CCAF uses mobile tickets to minimize paper tickets that are thrown away.
We produce, share and sell special merchandise so you can remember the CCAF even after summer is over. Instead of plastic bags you throw away too easily, we offer tarpaulin bags for your goods. Tarpaulin is a material used for tents and it is durable and waterproof. So even after the Festival, you can reuse this bag to carry your documents or things you buy.
A program book is an important document for a festival and performances but printing a large volume of such books and transporting them leave carbon footprint. The CCAF minimizes printed materials and gives easy access to online information so anyone can consult the program book in theaters and on our website.
Action 5 Collaboration with a Vegan and Zero Waste Brand Tigerlily is a perfumer making fragrances only with vegan materials. The CCAF and Tigerlily have focused on invisible but existing values to produce the Festival’s signature fragrance called “Stellar Light.” We would like to be connected to you through the fragrance and share the scent with you synesthetically.
The CCAF’s action starts right now. We will find what the Festival can do for me, you and us. And we will make ceaseless effort to offer the performing arts we love, with the power of respect and cooperation for different values.

It is the CCAF’s signature fragrance embodying the value of the performing arts and life which is invisible but exists obviously.
One summer night, under the stars, sirens play sophisticated instruments and enjoy a festival, with their wings fluttering. Gently moving like waves, the starlight comforts us as if it were shaping our hearts into something it wanted. Such waves generate beauty and challenges. If the spirits of the lake saw their festival, they would want to enjoy it with them.
Every summer, the festival comes to us again. We remember the Stellar Light.

Chuncheon Arts Festival, The festival where every participant becomes its owner.
‘Ten spoons of rice fills a bowl(십시일반)’ This Korean saying motivated us to launch the festival and it is also what we dream of. Chuncheon Arts Festival was launched as a donation- based festival to which planners, artists and staff members donated their time, talent and works. You, the audience of our performances, can add the last spoon of rice to the bowl. The festival started as the Chuncheon Dance Festival in 2002. Based on the festival’s conviction the corporate body Ten Spoons was officially founded in an attempt to share good things through the arts. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021, the Chuncheon Arts Festival expanded its finance and size with its new name. With a new goal of developing into one of Korea’s representative performing arts festivals, it is renewing its determination for another two decades. In this way, the festival is prepared with everyone’s heartfelt contribution, So the more our participants, the bigger our sharing. Thanks to many of you who share the dreams of Chuncheon Arts Festival, it will further strengthen its roots while also enriching its fruits for the audience and providing them with better shade.
