Saedarim refers to preparatory work done before a traditional shaman rite in Korea’s Jeju Island. Before serving the gods from heaven, those preparing the rite tidy up the place. The performance’s motif is “purification,” the literal meaning of saedarim. Building on this motif, it ceaselessly asks oneself questions, asks back and answers. The choreographer’s confession through dance is his earnest effort to take care of himself. For this, he purifies himself to get out of impurity. It is a dance raising himself up.

The basic structure of a shaman rite reminds us of our basic virtues. First, we 미덕과도 닮아있다. 연락하여 만나기를 청하고(청신), 함께 이야기를 나누며 call someone to see them. Second, we spend time with them, talking.

She then finds undiscovered spaces and shapes between those movements. Afterwards, she visualizes these spaces and shapes to interpret changes in existence.

The performance premiered in Vietnam in 2019, with Hong Nhung Vo and Nguyen Hoang Min dancing for it. This year, the Festival presents another version of the production with two men.

Supported by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture and Arts Council Korea, Lim Sun-young has presented a variety of performances in Korea while also training abroad (US, Germany and France). In 2018, she was selected as a choreographer for the international exchange residency of the Culture and Arts Promotion Fund. This led her to stay in Vietnam four years as a guest choreographer at the Arabesque Dance Company and to produce dances with the country’s UDG dancers.

“New-Atude,” a compound word of “new” and “attitude,” started from an attitude of seeing the body and its movements from new and diverse perspectives. The work is built around three keywords: attitude, layer and collage.

Gereume was always with the girl.

“Gereume” came from the choreographer’s father. The character refers to someone really big and trustworthy. The story could be about anyone. It could be about your loved ones you remember or it could be about yourself. This is a fairy tale about warmth, which is in everyone’s heart. As the pandemic makes all of us feel blue and insecure, this performance also reflects such pain. It started with this question: “what would be the means of existence for the stage where we, artists, perform?” In this world full of darkness and cynicism, it is hoped that the production will help you find out how to love yourself and others and what the true meaning of life is.

Jung Bo Kyung Dance Production It is a group of artists who pursue comprehensive expression of the arts based on dance, with a purpose of “seeing people through the arts.” Its director Jung Bo Kyung made her debut with The House under a Cliff in 2007. Her global recognition officially started when she became the first Asian to win the grand prix at the 2010 Bilbao Act Festival in Spain with On the Road. In 2019, she became an award winner at the Korean Dance Awards and Korean Dance Festival with ONE. In 2020, she was selected as a partner of the Arts Council Korea for the first time for a Korean dance artist, thus becoming a representative artist showing the current state of contemporary Korean dance.

The girl was walking alone as usual. People were talking a lot about the speechless girl. Whenever she heard them talk, she danced in her mind instead of responding. Her dance was quiet. Coming from deep inside her body, her dance used to flow out little by little without her knowledge. Then geureume also swayed with her.

“Please cut my hair moderately to make it pretty.” “Please pour it moderately.” “Do it moderately.” “Eat moderately.”

What does“moderate”mean? Does it mean to strike a balance? To maintain a certain level? What would be criteria for“moderateness”?

ⓒHanfilm

The motif of the performance is “those in the middle” who find themselves between things. Being “moderate” would mean that you manage to strike a balance somehow, never crossing the invisible line. After all, being moderate would be something relative and it doesn’t sound as serious as its actual importance. Regardless of generations or historical periods, we all find ourselves between things. We are between our family and its members. We are between things in our social structure. We are between friends. From a larger perspective, we are even between heaven and earth. We would have different ways to maintain “moderateness.” Nevertheless, we all change ourselves for the sake of others to find a proper form and direction in the middle. This is how this world works.

Kim Jungsoo (Choreographer) Kim Jungsoo believes in the power of experience. With mixed feelings, she keenly observes movements and flows going back and forth between analogue and digital spaces. In this context, she focuses on what “Koreanness” is. Her dance is comparable to swimming between Korea’s post-modern dance and contemporary dance.

We “watch” something on screen while we “meet” someone. Then what about a video conference or video call? Are we “watching” something or “meeting” someone? Going through the pandemic, we have become quite used to contactless settings. But the more contactless communication develops, the more it gets difficult and troublesome to form in-person relationships. Humans cannot live alone. Facing this era characterized by insensitivity to relationships, let us awaken our senses.

What kind of relationships are we forming? What do you prefer? A strong bond like tape with a great adhesive strength? Or a loose one like a sticky note? This performance is about reflecting on truthful exchanges for contacting and meeting people. To do so, it focuses on two keywords: “press” and “contact.” Under these themes, it observes how the body reacts and moves, what relationships we have and where we are today.

We are here. We focus on how society views the weak's view and on how the weak view society's view. Individuals are subjects and subjects form society. Society is us.

There are clear requirements society imposes on individuals. For example, society requires “light” things such as a light heart, a light relationship and a momentary pleasure … Eventually, “heaviness” belongs to individuals. Heaviness exists inside each of us and it is up to individuals to spew it out. It is natural for us to depend on the flow of society, with “heaviness” still inside us. And society is insensitive to problematic values. The production’s meaningfulness is found in the values of a double-sided individual who exists beyond one’s acts and social status. The performance will provide both the artist and audience with an opportunity for self-censorship. This is a story about unlimited heaviness amid unlimitedly light things. After all, we are also you.

Park Sangyeon from Korea and Lorenzo Cominoli from Italy are both guitarists. Their collaboration began as Lorenzo Cominoli saw Park Sangyeon's performance on social media and contacted him. They continued their melodic dialogue, communicating only through music and leading to their performance. After performing in Italy, they are coming to Chuncheon. It is Lorenzo Cominoli’s first visit to Korea and the beginning of the two musicians’ tour in the country. Modern civilization always entails sacrifices and scars. Humans have their limitations, which cause their pain. We cannot go back to the past. But the two guitarists tell us about humanity to overcome the pain. The pandemic has led to tremendous sacrifices and scars around the world including Italy and Korea and the pain still exists.

If you were to describe your life in one word, what would that word be? To drummer Jang Suung, that word is “G.” It is the name of the musician who has inspired him musically. It also refers to his grandmother who shares his childhood memories. Building on “G,” the common denominator of things from his life, he creates a narrative comparable to a film scene through jazz music. In that scene, you can find his life experience and inner feelings. The performers engage in musical communion, starting from the unclear sense of rhythm generated by Jang Suung’s drums. Whether they use the law of harmony or not, each performer’s intention is reflected to the fullest to continue the story.

The performance includes two pieces from the drummer’s album “G” The Live Album In Berklee and his newly composed piece. At first, you may feel a bit

One day, an egg falls into the Amazon forest. It starts cracking little by little and a turtle comes out! Unlike other turtles heading to the sea, this turtle goes inside the jungle, with great curiosity. What would the turtle be thinking about while meeting different animal friends on land? This is a non-verbal play which minimizes the performers’ lines. At the same time, this is a relaxed performance which allows the audience to make small noises or movements. The description of different animals and body expression help everyone easily understand and enjoy the play. The journey of the turtle, who moves forward in a new world despite fear, leads the audience to learn how to view this world.

Very Special Arts Village The group was founded in 2012 in order to create an environment of the arts and culture for everyone, either with or without disabilities. They make relaxed performances for all children including those with developmental disabilities. They also develop and run arts education programs that involve participants who need personalized support. They have continued to develop and present relaxed performances for children with developmental disabilities: Happpy Wolf, Slow-Moving Turtle and Hansel and Gretel. They are also running “A Very Special Arts Academy,” an arts education program for persons with disabilities.

Led by voice and sound performer Moon Su-kyung (Artistic Director), the Isanghanjit Project pursues fusion-based performances that are produced through close relationships coming from collaboration with artists of different genres. As they extend the realm of music into “sound,” they make a variety of experimental attempts in order to produce performances all generations could relate to.

Chuncheon Arts Festival, The festival where every participant becomes its owner.

‘Ten spoons of rice fills a bowl(십시일반)’ This Korean saying motivated us to launch the festival and it is also what we dream of. Chuncheon Arts Festival was launched as a donation-based festival to which planners, artists and staff members donated their time, talent and works. You, the audience of our performances, can add the last spoon of rice to the bowl.

The festival started as the Chuncheon Dance Festival in 2002. Based on the festival’s conviction the corporate body Ten Spoons was officially founded in an attempt to share good things through the arts. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2021, the Chuncheon Arts Festival expanded its finance and size with its new name. With a new goal of developing into one of Korea’s representative performing arts festivals, it is renewing its determination for another two decades.

In this way, the festival is prepared with everyone’s heartfelt contribution. So the more our participants, the bigger our sharing. Thanks to many of you who share the dreams of Chuncheon Arts Festival, it will further strengthen its roots while also enriching its fruits for the audience and providing them with better shade.
