Code.org CEO, Hadi Partovi [

Today I’m going to speak about the importance of teaching computer science as part of the curriculum in schools, not only because of the opportunity it gives to children, but also the importance of teaching creativity as part of education.

I’ll start with a personal story. My identical twin brother and I were raised in Tehran, Iran. The course of our lives changed with the Iranian revolution and the war with Iraq. I spent most of my early childhood in a

basement while bombs fell from the sky. But my life changed dramatically when my parents brought home a magical gift: they brought home a Commodore 64. But this wasn’t the magical gift. It was a computer, but it had no games, no applications, no software. The real magical gift was a book—an introduction to computer programming. With the help of my father, who was a physicist, and my mother who was a computer scientist, my brother and I taught ourselves how to program computers and we were able to create our own games and bring our own dreams to life in that horrible environment.

So, when I came to the United States as an Iranian immigrant, I benefited from what is thought of as the American dream, but it isn’t just an American dream. It’s a global ideal that if you work hard and put your mind and your energy to something, you can make your dreams come true. But that dream is really at a point where people are questioning whether that ideal of opportunity is equal in our world these days. Things are changing very rapidly because the fourth industrial revolution doesn’t include everybody. And that was true even before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, in 2022, we can more easily see the inequities as people with access to the Internet continue to get ahead of those without access. Wealth, access, and geography are all dividing people and increasing the difference between the haves and the have-nots.

This also has an impact on education. At its highest point, COVID-19 forced school closures in 194 countries, impacting 1.6 billion students. These schools, as they’re reopening, haven’t all reopened at the same level or in the same way, causing further inequality.

How do we give students opportunity? We have to consider the impact of technology on the workforce. Regardless of the pandemic, if you look at what technology is doing in our world, projections show that increased automation and machine learning are gradually replacing today’s work so that by the year 2040, roughly half of all work that we do today is going to be done by software or by technology. We all know about this, but what can we do about it?

I talk about this in terms of the importance of teaching technology, but is everything about computer science and coding really about how to prepare students for the future of work? Is it only about coding? Actually, no. There are actually much more important and fundamental reasons to teach computer science in school, not just because of preparing students for jobs and technology but because it helps make school itself better. Teaching computer science in school can help students prepare for life, regardless of what career they go into.

So, in terms of thinking of the preparation school gives you for life, when I went to school, every student would learn about the digestive system or how a light bulb work works. We teach this to every student, even if they don’t want to become a surgeon or an electrician because it prepares you for life. To understand how the world works in the 21st century, it’s equally fundamental to teach students what an algorithm is, how the Internet works, or how an app works. These things are changing society

and every industry, but most schools don’t teach the basics to students.

The other reason to teach computer science in school is preparation for university and career, regardless of what field you go into. Research shows that students who study computer science in school are outperforming in reading, writing, mathematics, and science. They have a better ability to solve problems and stronger executive functioning skills. They have a 17 percent greater probability of going to university or entering a four-year college program. When they’re in university, students that study computer science outperform at problem-solving skills. And then finally, when they graduate, they have higher salaries than their peers who don’t study computer science.

This isn’t just for the students who go into technology. Computer science helps you learn reading, writing, mathematics, science, problem-solving, and it helps you get into university and get a better paying job. And then the biggest stereotype in computer science has recently been broken. People think computer science is only for those who are better at math. The research now shows that language skills are eight times more likely to predict your success at learning computer science than math skills are, which is great news for language teachers.

Most of us didn’t learn how to program a computer or even how to use technology as part of school. Most adults have phones and we all have the experience of saying, “Oh, I wish there was an app that did this or that,” or “I wish they would make something.” We should be thinking – “I wish I made that.” Your children can create an app as long as your school teaches them how to create technology.

At this point in the United States, computer science has become the favorite subject in education, right behind dance, music, and the arts. It’s the thing students want to study the most, and it’s not because they think they’re going to have high paying careers—which is also true—but it’s because of the creativity. But the problem is most schools don’t teach computer science.

It’s not only about the schools that don’t teach it, but it’s also an income disparity issue. It turns out that schools in lower-income neighborhoods are less likely to teach computer science. But this is a problem we can solve, and it’s a problem we’re solving very rapidly. In just a few years, we’ve reached over 70 million students using the Code.org platform, and our students are almost half young women and almost half are students from underrepresented groups. And these students have now created over two hundred million projects on the Code.org platform, exercising their creativity with technology as part of their school experience.

Today, if you look at how much this movement has grown in just seven years within the United States, all 50 states have established policies to teach computer science within a primary and secondary school. More than 250 million dollars have been provided in funding to teach computer science, and more than 100,000 new teachers have begun teaching computer science.

But this isn’t limited to the United States. This is a movement that is global. Globally, more than 50 countries have announced plans to teach computer science in their schools. Many of them much more ambitious than what’s happening in the United States. If you look at countries like Saudi Arabia, Argentina, or even what’s happening right here in South Korea, countries are changing their education system from primary through secondary school to teach computer science. More than two million teachers globally have begun including computer science in their classrooms. The Hour of Code movement that we started just nine years ago to try just one hour of computer science has now reached 1.5 billion engagements, which is one of the fastest-growing movements in all of education. This is a global movement that we can strengthen and grow to bring this opportunity to all children.

Still, the majority of schools don’t teach computer science. Even with all this progress that we see, there are many, many students that we can help. We need to teach computer science because of it’s about creativity and collaboration. These are fundamental skills that every student needs to learn. And the best way to teach them in schools is using computer science.

We need to teach that computer science is about solving global problems. Humanity is at an historic crossroads and educators have a role to play. In the midst of a global pandemic, computer science holds the key to drug discovery and personalised medicine. At a time when democracies are suffering from a pandemic of misinformation, computer science holds the key to identifying fake news or moderating dialogue. And in a time when racism and xenophobia are colliding with a global economic recession, computer science holds the keys to opportunity and teaching computer science equitably can build bridges across populations. We need to shift computer science class to be about curing diseases, cleaning oceans, aiming for gender and racial equality, and addressing global poverty. These are some of the largest problems of our time, and the only way the future generation will address these problems is with the power that technology gives us, and we need to teach them that power as part of our education system.

My final point is that computer science is about community. A community of teachers that have built this movement from just a thousand teachers to over a million teachers showing that we can change public education globally to prepare the next generation for the technology that is going to reshape the future. This movement is still small. If you look around the world, 90 percent of schools still don’t teach computer science. But 20 or 30 years from now, every school will be teaching it, and the people who are going to bring this to schools, who are changing education are the teachers. Teachers are the most important players in this movement. They’re doing the most important job in the world. They’re changing the face of computer science, changing the face of technology, and preparing the next generation to help solve

the global problems we face today.

Micro:Bit CEO Gareth Stockdale [

The BBC micro:bit was originally created as part of the BBC’s Make It Digital initiative, launched in 2014. 29 expert partners came on board, each contributing resources and expertise. From early 2016, up to 1 million micro:bits were distributed to Year 7 students (or equivalent, aged 11-12), non-formal education settings and libraries across the UK in a project led by BBC Education. The Micro:bit Educational Foundation was founded in October 2016 with the aim of bringing digital inspiration to students worldwide. The founding partners were the BBC, Arm, IET, Nominet, Microsoft, Lancaster University, AWS, and Samsung. The Foundation is a not for profit based in the UK but with a global reach and remit. Our mission is “To inspire every child to create their best digital future.”

We want to broaden participation, allowing every child to take their first steps with technology and be inspired to become a digital creator not only a digital consumer. We particularly work on strategies to broaden participation for girls and under-represented groups. We believe that coding and digital creativity are foundational for life chances in the 21st century. Not only for a future career where all jobs will need understanding of and ability to deploy digital skills, but in the ability to take part in debates about how technology should be deployed and how it shapes society.

Physical computing with the BBC micro:bit brings technology to life in your students' hands. It takes programming beyond the screen. The micro:bit is proven to engage students with coding and motivate them to learn more about computer science.

When implemented well, physical computing helps deepen understanding, broaden participation and maintain interest for a diverse array of students. The addition of the physical device can transform a

learner's perspective of the purpose of computing - helping them connect the actions on the screen to impact in the real world. Teachers that use physical computing in their classrooms are often passionate about the difference it has made for their students.

There are multiple ways to programme the micro:bit. The new micro:bit Python Editor is designed to help you deliver your programming fundamentals lessons with the benefits of the micro:bit. The purpose of this new editor is to reduce barriers to learning text-based languages and help you to teach. The new editor's simulator allows you to model coding tasks to your students using a virtual micro:bit. Students can also use this to test, debug and iterate their program designs before putting their code on a real micro:bit. The Reference section allows your students to learn programming concepts through short explanations and code snippets they can drag and drop straight into their projects. Also, Code structure and error highlighting as well as auto complete help a student’s progress. Microsoft’s MakeCode editor is the perfect way to start programming and get creating with the BBC micro:bit. The colour-coded blocks are familiar to anyone who’s previously used Scratch, and yet powerful enough to access all the features of this tiny computer. You can also switch to JavaScript to see the text-based code behind the blocks. Both of these editors are translated into Korean and all free to use.

It is estimated that 25 million young people from more than 60 countries have benefitted from learning with the micro:bit so far. There have been large scale projects in over 30 countries, and we are constantly learning about what works to broaden participation. We work hard to support educators to teach coding in the classroom.

‘‘Teachers are the greatest influencers when it comes to kids’ engagement with coding.’’ BBC Research 2017

We have recently launched our first professional development courses. Using short and friendly videos, our courses cover the principles of computer science and practical tips for teaching computational thinking and programming concepts with the micro:bit. We also have projects, global goals design thinking resources and lessons. All of these are free to use.

And finally, a preview of something we are currently working on. Machine Learning impacts all of our lives suggesting which music or films that you watch or listen to, through to which political views you see. It is important that children understand how it works and understand the consequences of incomplete data both for your task but for how technology represents the needs of the whole of society. Aarhus University in Denmark has created this beta solution for teaching ML in the classroom using micro:bit. Getting hands on with creating and modifying your own model in the classroom. Please visit www.ml-machine.org to give it a try (just in Danish and English at the moment). Thanks for your time and for listening; working in partnership with organisations and teachers around the world we really do think that we can inspire every child to create their best digital future.
