The Role of Oral History in the Origin and Spread of ‘Daehaeng Seon’: Focusing on the Concepts of ‘Hanmaum and Juingong’
Choi, Dong-soon (Academy of Buddhist Studies, Dongguk University)
The main themes of this paper are Daehaeng Seon’s principal concepts of ‘Hanmaum and Juingong.’ I examined the concepts of ‘Hanmaum’ (One Mind) and ‘Juingong’ (
the original self) in terms of both the origin of Buddhism and Seon history. I also analyzed the utilization and expanded definitions of these two terms to confirm the legitimacy and identity of Hanmaum Seonwon ( ). Furthermore, to study the early years of Hanmaum Seonwon, I met many of her followers and fellow students to gather more information. The methodology of presenting my data was suggested through the memories and retrospectives of her followers and fellow students. I then summarized my analysis and research from six perspectives: 1) I analyzed the origin of the terms ‘Hanmaum’ and ‘Juingong,’ and I confirmed that the culture of her Seon center was based on Mahayana Buddhism. I then analyzed those two terms from various aspects. Based on my results, I determined they could be summed up respectively as ‘concentration’ (
, dhyana) and ‘meditative insight’ ( , vipassyana). 2) I analyzed the terms
‘Hanmaum’ and ‘Juingong’ in terms of the principal historical doc- trines of the Seon School. ‘Hanmaum’ is linked to the Seon concept of directly revealing the deepest principle without resorting to ‘expedient means’. 'Juingong' is related to the Seon concept of beholding the Buddha-nature within oneself ( ), becoming Buddha (
). I also suggest that these terms are consistent with the concept of ‘stable mind’ ( ) that comes as a result of Buddhist practice. This is the teaching of Bodhidharma (
), the reputed founder of the Chinese Chan/Seon School ( ). 3) I analyzed Master Daehang's teachings of the Dharma from the aspect of insentience ). She observed both the subject and object in her inner ( conversations with nature, where she discovered her own 'Juingong'. 4) I analyzed Ven. Daehaeng’s teaching of mind healing. She said that everyone has an infinite amount of energy called ‘Hanmaum·Juingong’ and that anyone can realize this and use it for healing. 5) I analyzed the frequency of the terms 'Hanmaum' and 'Juingong' in records of her Dharma talks. I concluded that her teaching method made use of the ‘three rounds of explaining the Dharma' (
). The Buddha repeated his teachings three times. 6) I concluded that we need much more data to research her teachings, and for that the collective memories and anecdotes
ing the Dharma' (
of her disciples are very important.

The Current Musical status and Future direction of Seonbeop-ga
Yoon, Sohee (Institute for Esoteric Buddhism at Uiduk University)
Ven. Daehaeng founded the Hanmaum temple choir in the first year of her public mission. It was an unusual move at a time when most Buddhists gave little or no thought to music. The main purpose of the choir was so that more people could easily understand her teachings and pursue the attainment of “Juingong” (
One's own pristine inner-self or self-nature; a master, or the governor of self). She called the choir’s hymns/songs “seonbeop-ga” ( ) meaning “songs to meditate by.” At that time most Buddhist hymns were called “chanbul-ga” ( ), meaning “praise Buddha songs,” and were sung to praise buddhas and bodhisattvas. No matter how good a painting or sermon is, it is difficult to sing or listen to a song dozens or hundreds of times. In this respect, Ven. Daehaeng’s choir was an excellent means to propagate her teaching of Hanmaum through music. Except for the two hymns “Hanmaum Seonwon-ga” and “Formless Verse of Impermanence (
), all of the lyrics for the 68 Seonbeop-ga are based on Daehaeng's verses. “Formless Verse of Impermanence” was written by a prison inmate and is
based on Huineng’s verse explaining that all things are in essence empty and formless). For the music, there were a total of 15 compos- ers, including Seo Chang-up, and Kim Dong-hwan; Kim Dong-hwan wrote the most with 12 songs. These hymns promoted the practice of Daehaeng Seon medi- tation, and their spirituality and beauty conveyed the purpose and essence of Daehaeng Seon. However, as a musical genre, they are limited in terms of Western musical standards. I hope the album of chants with the recording of
Hanmaum Yojeon (“the essence of Hanmaum”) may some day be welcomed into the religious com- munity of traditional Korean Buddhism to be enjoyed by all. I look forward to seonbeop-ga being diversified into other genres (children's songs, hip-hop, rap, fusion, etc.) suitable for the music sensibilities of future generations and spreading beyond the Hanmaum Buddhist community to the world at large to become another form of world music.
[Key Words] Seonbeop-ga, Hanmaum choir, Hanmaum chants, Daehaeng Seonbeop-ga, Buddhist chants.

Epidemics and Korean Buddhism
Han, SangKil (Academy of Buddhist Studies, Dongguk University)
Until the development of modern medicine, epidemic diseases were a disaster that could not be controlled by medicine. Since they could not be prevented by human effort, various rituals were performed to comfort the heavens and evil spirits. In order to combat such disasters, religious ceremonies rooted in Buddhism, Taoism, or shamanism were often resorted to. Our ancestors did not dis- tinguish between religion and faith, but used a variety of spiritual ceremonies. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of Korean Buddhist rituals to deal with our current epidemic, and to that end, I will look at various sutras and their associated rituals. Buddhist rituals were also used to combat epidemics during the Goryeo and Joseon periods using various sutras and dharanis. According to most sutras, the cause of an epidemic was usually attributed to a decline in the people’s faith in Buddhist teachings, and the solution was to emphasize the restoration of Buddhist truth. Dharanis were often associated with a specific ritual to fight an epidemic. Although there were some differences between sutras and dharanis, they both commonly emphasized chanting and prayer.
Many Buddhist rituals related to the epidemics in Goryeo and Joseon reflected these characteristics. The reason many rituals were per- formed was that believing in and having faith in them was not really that important; they were performed for the real need to fight the epidemic. As a result, there was little or no consistency in these rituals. Their form and content didn’t really matter because their ultimate purpose was to defeat the epidemic and bring relief to the people.
[Key words] Epidemics, Buddhist Rituals, The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra; ︣ Prajn āpāramitā-Sūtra , Sutra Parade, Jumchal Buddhist Ceremony, Suryuk-jae.
